This weekend was another quick trip with all hands on deck. My folks are in town visiting so we took a trip up to the house to show them around. Well, that’s the story we sold them. We were just hoping for some free labor. Kidding, kidding…. We arrived Saturday evening and got settled in. They stayed in the house while we stayed in the campervan. Sunday morning I treated everyone to some cowboy coffee. If you haven’t tried cowboy coffee yet, you really should.

After a leisure morning, it was time to get to work. Today was demo day. In bedroom 3 (formerly the sleeping porch), we took the siding off of the living room side wall as well as removed the two windows. This will allow for the closing in of the window areas as well as making room to add a door to bedroom 3 from the living room. Currently you have to either go through bedroom 2 to get into bedroom 3 or go outside and go in through the front porch. The door to the front porch will remain but I want to close off the doorway to bedroom 2 and add an entry door from the living room. That will make it much more private and functional.
Starting to remove the siding The siding is almost all removed. The board and batten will stay Carefully removing one of the original weighted double hung windows
Oceana tackled the massive pile of leaves from the banyan tree and my mom started cleaning up the back yard. I tore out the siding which will be salvaged for actual siding repairs on the house in the future. As such, my dad removed all the nails and stored the material in the shop. We then removed the two windows into the living room and stored them in the shop. I think at least one of them will get reused. In the closet, we started taking out the paneling only to find more siding hiding behind the paneling. That’s great. I’ll take it off and use it for siding replacement around the house. But that will have to wait for another day. Also, that means the sleeping porch was yet another addition onto the house. I think that’s addition number 5 or 6. There’s so many I’ve lost count!
What was interesting is that the wall between bedroom 3 and the living room was framed up with 2x2s. This is interesting because it is a load bearing wall carrying 2 roof pitches. Behind the white siding was the original board and batten siding. This siding is 1″ thick and was ran vertically. The way it was installed means it is carrying some of the load from both roofs. Since it’s structural, it will stay. After framing in the window openings, I’ll add another layer of 2x supports over the board and batten siding on the bedroom side to beef up the wall framing and to provide a smooth surface for drywall.

Good weekend at the lake house! So glad Dad and I could help. This house will be so nice when the remodeling is complete, plus the location is so beautiful near the lake!
Love, Mom
