With salons being opened back up after being closed for nearly 2 months, Oceana’s schedule has been crazy busy. That’s a good thing. However, we’re now planning our time up here around her busy schedule. For this weekend, she saw clients on Saturday so we came up Saturday evening and stayed through Monday which was Memorial day.
Sunday morning we got started bright and early once again focusing on the front porch. Last time we were up we got the beadboard installed and primed. Before we could paint, we needed to install the moldings and mask everything off as we’re going to spray the entire porch.

Sunday turned into scribing Sunday. A scribe is when you have a straight piece going against an imperfect surface, which in this case was the old siding and the floors, and you cut the straight piece to fit the imperfectness of the mating surface. First up was the trim piece where the beadboard met the old siding. Next was the base molding on the north side of the porch. Those floors were bad! The south side didn’t need scribed, thank goodness.
After installing the moldings, we caulked everything in and puttied all of the nail holes. During this time Oceana had been spot priming any bad areas of the ceiling before we painted. She also began masking off all of the blue porch parts as we don’t want to get white overspray on them. We applied plastic to the blue porch posts and rails as well as the windows and doors along the house side.
Oceana is spot priming Plastic is up. Floors are clean. Time to spray
With the prep work complete, we got the paint sprayer set up again. I got in my green overalls and put on a do-rag and mask. We sprayed the ceilings, the siding, the beadboard, and the new moldings across the whole porch. One of the nice things with the paint sprayer is that you can apply a heavy, even coat of paint. If we were to have brushed this, we may have had to two coat some areas. No need for two coats with the sprayer. After we finished cleaning up the sprayer, we cut a hole in the plastic in the screen doorway just in time for Bud and Diana to come by. I hadn’t had a chance to look in the mirror yet, but evidently I was sporting a white racoon mask.

Monday morning we pulled the remaining tape and plastic off of the porch. As we were removing the tape, some of the new blue paint peeled off at various areas. Bummer. The areas where the paint failed was only over the original previously painted components, not at any of the new work. These areas had been sanded with 80 grit which typically cures most adhesion issues. Regardless, we peeled it back and then spot primed the failed areas.
Taking down the plastic Bummer. The ceiling looks great though!
The new paint really cleans up and brightens up the front porch. It looks much better. Monday morning we then went through and painted the window and door casings blue as well as touched up any of the spot primed areas. We went back and forth whether or not the baseboards should be painted blue. I think they should but Oceana likes them white. What do you think? For now, they stayed white. That was all for this weekend. Until next time.
Wow what a difference. Looks great guys. Glad to hear Oceana is back in business. Take care.
Thanks Connie. We’re making good progress. We should have a room ready for you and Ron in the next month or two!
I’m with Oceana on the white baseboards. It’s looking really good!
Thanks Jane! Looks like I’m outnumbered on the baseboard. White it is!
Wow! You guys are amazing! I’m tired just watching you work. Honestly, I was skeptical when you showed Connie & me the house but I’m a believer now! That picture of you in the tractor bucket really shows the size of the banyan tree. You tamed the beast! I vote for white baseboards (sorry Jake). It will make the porch look bigger.
Yeah, we’ve come a long way since you guys came to visit. There’s still lots more to do but at least it’s starting to take shape now!
It’s really looking nice neighbor. What are you doing to the porch floor?
Thanks Cynthia! We’re looking at installing the waterproof vinyl plank flooring. For right now we’re going to put the carpet back down until we get a little later on in the project as we don’t want to new floors to get damaged with all they work still yet to be done.
I look forward to seeing what you guys accomplish each week. That porch is 100% better!! I never knew about scribing, but can understand it now. Susie reads this blog and she commented that you are hard workers. She can’t believe how much you get done in a weekend. I agree!
