Last week, we played musical windows and got the impact windows installed in the front bedroom. This week, we got the 3 other impact windows installed. As Bob finished the trim on the new impact windows in the bedroom, Oceana started caulking the new trim on the shop. Over the course of this week she was able to get all of the shop trim caulked and painted blue. It looks great! Nice job Oceana.
The old siding
After Bob finished the trim on the impact windows in the front bedroom, he started removing the old shingle siding from the house. He continued removing the shingles all the way to the back corner by the kitchen window. What was below the shingles wasn’t pretty. At all. This house got ugly quick! It won’t stay this way, but it’s sure fun to point at it and laugh. The original wood siding is in decent repair on the back bedroom. However, across the back of the house, much of the siding will need to be replaced. You can also see where there is a different type of siding on the kitchen addition.

Good bye light blocking awnings
As the siding came off, Bob also removed the old metal awnings over the windows. I can’t believe how much more light comes into the house with those awnings removed. It’s a pretty big change. With the awnings removed, Bob started on the back bedroom window replacement. We’re replacing those two massive single pane windows with slightly smaller impact windows. Bob framed in the openings and I helped him get the windows set in place. Those impact windows are heavy!

Impact windows (for yankees)
For our northern friends….impact windows mean hurricane rated windows. They’re supposed to take a 2×4 into the glass at 100+ mph without the glass getting a hole in it. The glass will still break, but the house will still remain sealed up.
Siding and windows
Once Bob got the two bedroom windows squared away, he replaced some missing siding adjacent to one of the windows. Next he removed the old gable vent near the roof on the back bedroom wall and then sided in the opening. After that, he started on the dining room window. He took out the old window and then I helped him get the new impact window in place. Once the windows were installed, he taped the flanges on the outside to seal them up from the elements.
Window Trim
Next up was the window trim. We’re going to hold off on putting the trim around the back dining room window right now as there’s so much siding to be replaced. However, Bob got the two back bedroom windows trimmed out. All but the apron’s at least. Those should go in tomorrow.

Odds and ends
It was a good week and it was good to see so much progress being made – even if the house looks like crap right now. Hopefully we can get some of the old siding prepped and painted this coming week. Oceana’s garden is still going nuts. After doing some soil tests, she got some various fertilizers to make sure everything keeps growing like it has been. I’ve made more progress on the teak deck that I’m building. One side nearly complete, one side to go!

That’s all for this week. As always, thanks for following along with our journey.
I’m gonna have to tell Hugo about your impact windows hahaha
We know they’re Hugo approved!
Exciting to see so much progress, and Oceana’s garden is beautiful!!
