This weekend my parents came to visit. We’d been working to get the back bedroom finished to a point where they could stay in the room without all of their stuff getting covered in drywall dust. On Friday, I got a coat of primer cut in on the walls and the new window and door trim. First thing Saturday morning I rolled on a coat of primer to the walls. The walls and trim are white now so it looks nice. On Saturday, I also got the access door built (so you can get to the mechanical items over the bathroom ceiling) as well as got the ridge trim fabricated and installed on the ceiling. It’s starting to look nice!
It’s a bedroom
On Sunday, Oceana and I ran to the storage unit and picked up a bed for the back bedroom. We got the bed set in place and then hung some curtains on the windows. It actually looks like a bedroom! We finished in time to relax for a few before my parents arrived.
Day 1, ER visit
On Monday, my Dad gave me a hand with milling some lumber. I have a lot of lumber that needs to be processed. We spent a few hours planing lumber until he got a big ol’ splinter right in his finger. It was just shy of an inch long and nearly poked out the other side of his finger. Ouch! He tried to get it out but it ended up breaking off inside. So, his first day here and he’s off to the ER, again. They were able to do minimal cutting and exploring with tweezers to get it out.
Hurricane straps on the carport
Tuesday Bob installed some massive hurricane straps connecting the carport roof to the telephone pole posts on the far side. They’ve got like 25 nails each and they bolt all the way through to the top of the beam. That should do the trick!

Metal roof trim
Tuesday I made some trim for Bob to install on the chicken coop and shop roofs. Based on the way the metal edging sits, it left a 3/4″ gap where it meets the fascia. In a high wind situation, those pieces of metal are just waiting to be ripped off. We can’t have that! So I made some trim that would fit up in place and Bob got it installed on the shop and chicken coop. Oceana wasn’t far behind getting it all painted blue. The blue looks great!

Barn Door
Since I finished and delivered the teak deck last week, I was able to break down the platform and have the carport cleared out again. Since it was cleared out, we can finally finish insulating and trimming out the sliding barn door. Bob got the insulation installed and then trimmed it out with some more of the old roof sheathing boards. Now it’s ready for paint.

Soffit and Fascia
Bob got started on the soffit and fascia work. Those are fancy words for the trim pieces between the edge of the roof and your siding. We’re going to take off and replace nearly all of the fascia. For the soffit, I think we’re going to keep it off and repaint it as it is. The soffits used to be open and painted and I kind of like that look.
New Electrical Panel
Since my Dad enjoys working with electrical, he offered to replace the electrical panel in the house. That’s how it went, I swear. Regardless, he got the old panel removed and the new panel set in place. At this point all of the original house wiring is no longer connected. That’s a good thing, since it was all in real bad shape. We pulled a new wire to the hot water heater and he got that back online. Now we’ll have to look at what else to wire up.

Thank my Mom for most of the photos for this post. I think she likes taking pictures. That’s all for this week. As always, thanks for following along.
The sunset picture is breathtaking. Everything is looking awesome. We need a picture of the back bedroom. Glad Gary’s finger is good. So nice to have a dad with skills he is willing to share. With everyone including Ron.
enjoy your time together.
Thanks Connie. There will be more pictures of the back bedroom to come. There’s still a bit of work to do there including a full bathroom remodel.
I love reading your posts and watching the beautiful transformation of this home. I swear I’m coming over to meet you in person this next year when we come down.
Thanks Cindy. I’m hoping that next time you’re in town that we’ll be having our finished house open house party. You’re invited!
