Last week we made good progress on the bathroom and on the bedroom floors. This week, I applied two more coats of floor finish to the pine floors. They look awesome!

Bathroom vanity
I also continued on with the vanity build. For this bathroom, we opted to go with an in-stock vanity top to save a bit of time from building our own out of corian. We measured for a vanity top that would fit the space and Oceana picked one up that she liked. I built the vanity to the dimensions to fit the new top. As I was building it, it seemed bigger than I expected. After I got the door hung, I decided to take it into the bathroom to see. As soon as I set it in place, I knew it was too big. Bummer. I’ll wind up cutting it down a few inches in width and in depth. Then I’ll have to make a corian vanity top to fit it. I guess this is what custom work is all about – building to fit the space.

Picture messages
As I sent the picture above to Oceana letting her know that I didn’t like the vanity and that I would be rebuilding it, I also received a picture from Oceana.

Golden what!?
Oceana’s suite mate at the salon had bred her golden doodle and had a bunch of puppies. Out of 11, there was one puppy left and it was the laziest one of the entire group (which aligns with the type of dog we want – lazy). Oceana asked if she could bring him home and I agreed. Well, I guess we’ve got a new puppy now.

Teak
After brainstorming what to name him, Oceana voted for Teak and I agreed. Teak is 8 weeks old and is very laid back. He’s between 5 and 10lbs right now, and we expect him to get to around 40lbs since that’s how big his parents were. As we did with our other dog(s), we’re opting to crate train him. I personally think crate training is good for dogs so that they have their own safe space – their own cave if you will. However, when crate training a puppy, they tend to cry and howl throughout the night. The first few nights were rough, but he’s begun sleeping through the night now. It’s really nice to sleep again.

Isla and Hugo
On Monday evening, Oceana’s sister Isla and her husband Hugo stopped by with their big RV. They had been camping in St Augustine and wanted to come visit our house on their way back to Miami. This is the first time they’ve been to Lake Byrd. I think they liked it. We took them out for some authentic Mexican food (which they can’t find in Miami) that is a restaurant hidden in a gas station. They really enjoyed the good food. It was nice seeing them again – it’s been a while. I’m also glad that we opted to install RV electrical so that they could plug in and have A/C overnight.
Baseboard
On the house, I got the baseboard made and ready for the bedroom and bathroom. I have to make the baseboard because they don’t sell this profile baseboard anymore. After getting it shaped and sanded, Oceana primed and painted the pieces for the bedroom. She’ll do the final coat of paint after I install them. The remaining piece will get clear coated so that it matches the vanity in the bathroom.
That’s all, folks
That’s all for this week. As always, thanks for following along!
The house looks amazing. You guys do great work. Looks like you guys may know what you’re doing. I’m sure you learned some thing during the whole process. Good luck with the new dog.
Thanks Uncle Chuck! We’ve definitely learned a lot as we go. I would like to build a new construction house in the future. It would be so easy compared to this!
Looks like Teak and Lacey get along. He is a very cute puppy! So nice that Hugo and Isla could stop and visit. The floors in the back bedroom look great! I can’t wait to see the new vanity completed. We are packing for our trip to Norway today and will fly out tomorrow. Love, Mom
Have a good trip! Tell everyone across the pond we said hello.
Hello you two,
Teak is adorable. Goldendoodles are so cute. How’s potty training going? That was nice of your sister and her husband to come visit. I’m sure you had a lot to catch up on. Do either of you actually sit down and watch television? You both seem to be always doing and going, going going. I guess when your young you have the stamina. Floors look good Jake.
Hey Becky! Potty training is actually going really well. Crate training on the other hand…… let’s just say we haven’t gotten a lot of sleep lately.
I’ll usually watch a TV show or two as I sit down for dinner around 8pm or so. But we’re always doing something. I’ve found that it has taken quite a few years of constantly doing to build up the type of stamina necessary for what we’re doing on this house. It’s still real easy to get wore out.
