New years day beach sunrise
On new years morning we carried on with our tradition of watching the sun rise over the ocean on Singer Island. After that, we got the last of the base cabinets installed in our Loxahatchee house. Once that was complete, we hooked up the trailer and headed up to Lake Byrd with another load of our stuff with us. We got in late enough that we opted to wait until Saturday morning to unload.

Clearing our the back bedroom
After unloading the trailer, we cleared out the back bedroom. What did we clear out? All of the remodeling supplies to redo this back bedroom. Haha. My folks will be coming into town in the near future and I figure even though it’s a work area, we can still use the bedroom as a bedroom. I’ll also get new PEX water lines ran to the bathroom off of this bedroom and bring it back online temporarily. That means I’ll have to install that pedestal sink, again. Oh joy.
Time for the closets
With the bedroom cleared out, it was time to finish the closets. Closets, plural, because I made a small hallway between the two bedrooms that until now we’ve been using as a second door into and out of the front bedroom. However, it wasn’t intended to be a hallway, it will be back to back closets. Since space is really tight, I opted not to frame in a 2×4 wall between the two rooms. 2x4s would use 3 1/2″ of space. In how I set it up, I only used 3/4″. That was a worthwhile space savings.
Prefinished closets
I opted to use a plywood that is covered with white formica for the interior of the closets. It is already finished (doesn’t need painted), it is hard wearing, and it installs quickly. The only downside is that there will be exposed screws. For a closet – I’m ok with that. I started with the two side walls. Since it’s a hallway (the closets aren’t divided in half yet), I did full pieces that would catch both closets. In these pieces I routed in shelf pin holes down each side for both closets.

Finishing them up
With the side panels installed, I cut out the pieces for the closet backs. I got both pieces into the closet and then installed the 3/4″ cleating that goes between the two backs. I then installed the backs in place. Next up were the ceilings. A little more cleating and the ceilings were in. Last were the shelves. I only had enough material left over for 2 shelves in each closet. That will work for now until I can get another sheet of plywood and make a few more shelves. Also, I’ll likely make a hanging rack that mounts to the bottom of one of the shelves but I’ll have to save that for another day.

Watch your eyes!
While doing the closet work, I managed to get a super tiny piece of the laminate in my eye. It ended up scratching my cornea and causing me all sorts of grief for a few days. It’s better now but dang, that wasn’t fun. That’s all for now. Back to remodeling our Loxahatchee house. Thanks for following along on our crazy journey!

Ok…this was a crazy post. I had to try to remember which house you were working on as I read it. Obviously, after reading it several times, I have figured out what you did and where you did it. 🙂 Anyway, we look forward to seeing the updates to both homes in the near future. As always…to you and Oceana I say “keep up the good work.” (But try to get some rest too.) Love, Mom
