More good progress on the house this week. On the exterior, the rest of the soffit and fascia came down except on two of the gables over the front porch. The house looks much better without it. Bob got a good start on installing the new cypress fascia boards before running out of material. The new fascia looks great. After running out of material, he moved onto replacing the siding on the gables over the front porch. Most of the siding is in poor condition and the roof flashing is improperly done. So the old siding and roof flashing came off and then new properly installed flashing and siding was installed on the right side gable. One down, two to go. He also got new fascia installed on that gable.
Oceana’s a painting champ
Oceana got all of the new trim at the metal roof painted on the shop. She also got the barn door painted white with a blue X. She’s getting really good at paint and paint prep!
New can lights
On the interior, we got new can lights! This is really exciting for us. We take for granted that we walk into a room and flip a switch and then lights come on. Well, the living room and the kitchen didn’t have proper overhead light fixtures. The dining room had an old fixture which we have since removed. The living room only had a lamp in the corner. That means the room was always dark. The kitchen had a few plug in lights and was always dark too. With the new can lights, everything looks so much bigger. Some of them we put on dimmer switches. We had planned to leave the kitchen can lights without a dimmer as we will have undercabinet lighting (which will be dimmable) in the future. However, after the first morning of waking up and having two spotlights shining down, we opted to have a dimmer on the kitchen can lights too.
Hangin’ out in the crawlspace
I got to spend some quality time in the crawlspace this week pulling new wires for new electrical circuits. We ran new wiring to the kitchen and a new circuit to the living room. My Dad did all of the work from up top and I was the grunt in the crawl space.
More electrical
Out in the shop, my dad installed a new subpanel. That’s basically another electrical panel that’s connected to your main panel. I’ve got some larger machinery on order and it’s power hungry! The easiest way to get new wiring for it was to install a subpanel. My dad got the wires puled and the subpanel squared away. I’ve just got to locate a new breaker for the main panel to feed the subpanel.

That’s all
That’s all for this week. Good progress, and the extra helping hands around the house have been very welcome. Once again you can thank my mom for all of the great action shots of us working.
I was thinking you could have titled this week’s blog “Let there be light!” What a difference the can lights have made! Bob has been making good progress on the outside of the house too. It has been fun staying on Lake Byrd with you and Oceana. Our room turned out superb, and we have slept well. Thanks to all your wonderful neighbors too. I got a ride around the lake in the front seat of Bud’s speed boat which was exhilarating!
Thanks for your continued updates, Jake. Love following along with the transformation of that long-abandoned structure into a HOME that is truly filled with LOVE, inside and out! As for you, Cindy… I will forever remember our boat ride together. Psalm 71:23 comes to mind. You certainly shouted for JOY! 🙂
